TELEGRAPH AVENUE HAS IT ALL

New York has Greenwich Village. London has Soho. San Francisco has Haight-Ashbury, and Berkeley has Telegraph Avenue, gateway to the University of California, where the past meets the present in six lively city blocks. Poets, artists, musicians and scholars have appreciated Telegraph’s distinctive atmosphere for decades and for good reason.

UNIQUE SHOPS
A widely acclaimed shopping mecca, the Telegraph Area offers perhaps the greatest concentration of independent new and used bookstores, music stores, cafes, and boutiques in the country, many of which have been voted “Best” in Bay Area publications. Telegraph Ave boutiques offer an exciting array of fashions, from outrageous club gear to authentic swing dresses, with a few traditional stores along the way. Mom and Dad can pick up some khakis while Junior gets tattooed. Or… perhaps a temporary henna tattoo meticulously painted by a street artist is more in order!

FOOD AND LIVE MUSIC
There are over fifty restaurants and cafes on Telegraph and its adjacent streets. The ethnic restaurants span the globe with dishes from almost every continent. Some of the restaurants and pubs double as nighttime music venues, offering everything from an aspiring rock band to a sampling of blues or the pulsing beat of reggae artists.

LANDMARKS AND EVENTS
Points of interest not to be missed include Museums (Hearst Anthropology Museum, Berkeley Art Museum, and Pacific Film Archive), Sporting Venues (Memorial Stadium, Edwards Field and the Haas Pavilion), and Music Venues (Greek Theater, Zellerbach Hall). The Campanile, a symbol of the University campus that also offers one of the best views of the Bay Area, and the work of two famous architects – Julia Morgan’s Berkeley City Club and Bernard Maybeck’s Christian Science Church, are other must see destinations. And of course there’s always historic People’s Park.

TRANSPORTATION AND PARKING
There is a BART station jus six blocks northwest of Telegraph Avenue. AC Transit buses serve Telegraph on the 7, 40, 51, 52 or 64 lines. In addition, UC Berkeley offers a Cal Shuttle which provides easy transport in and around the UC campus. Public parking lots are scattered throughout the Telegraph Area. Bicycle racks are strategically located throughout the area.
